Hairdressing has been a huge part of my life since I was 13 years old. I qualified at 16 and started my business the same year, so for over 13 years I’ve had the privilege of building a career that has taken me through many different parts of our industry. From salon life and business ownership to education, editorial, destination weddings and red carpet styling, every experience has shaped the way I work and the way I see our profession.
Owning a business from such a young age has taught me that success is about so much more than creating great hair. It’s about building trust, delivering an exceptional client experience, leading with integrity, adapting to change and always being willing to learn. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career.
Alongside working with clients, education has become one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. Whether I’m mentoring hairdressers, working with brands or sharing techniques on stage, I’m passionate about helping others grow and raising standards across our industry.
I’ve always admired businesses that have a clear vision, invest in their people and continue to evolve. For me, the best businesses aren’t necessarily the biggest—they’re the ones that consistently deliver, support those around them and leave a lasting impression on both their clients and the industry.
It’s a real privilege to be invited to judge the British Hairdressing Business Awards. Having spent over 13 years building my own business, I understand the commitment, resilience and passion it takes to succeed. I’m looking forward to celebrating the businesses that are driving our industry forward through innovation, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Owner of the award-winning Dot Hair in Liverpool, Phill Gallagher, boasts an illustrious career spanning over three decades in the hairdressing industry. His journey, marked by unwavering passion and exceptional skill, has solidified his reputation as a creative force, business expert and industry leader.
Early Inspirations
Phill's fascination with hairdressing ignited at a young age, influenced by his Nan's home perming sessions and his mother's unique, albeit clumsy, haircutting attempts. These early experiences and trips to the local barbers fuelled his curiosity and desire to understand the technical intricacies of hairdressing. & I always had a technical mind, intrigued by the structure and mechanics of things, says Phill. & The scissors and rollers my mum used piqued my interest. At 16, after a series of interviews facilitated by a hairdressing employment agency and the support of his parents, Phill secured an apprenticeship at TONI&GUY. This opportunity proved pivotal, providing him with a foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of hairdressing.
Education and Training
During his apprenticeship at TONI&GUY at its flagship Covent Garden salon, Phill honed his skills and completed his NVQ coursework. The combination of in-salon training and specialised sessions in London helped Phill quickly grasp the nuances of hairdressing, setting the stage for his future success.
Career Milestones
Phill's career trajectory at TONI&GUY was remarkable. Starting as an apprentice in 1991, he advanced to the position of stylist within 18 months and ultimately became the Artistic Director by age 21 – a remarkable achievement. His tenure there was marked by participation in numerous hair shows, competitions, and fashion events, contributing to his rapid professional growth.
Over the years, Phill's talent and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including:
“Becoming part of the FAME team in 2002 was a proud moment for me”, says Phill. “To be recognised on a national level and to be one of four young and up-and-coming talents in the UK not only boosted my confidence but led onto new opportunities to further my career.”
Dot Hair: A Dream Realised
In 2021, Phill opened award-winning Dot Hair in Liverpool. Despite challenges posed by the lingering effects of the pandemic, Phill's visionary design ensured ample space and safety for clients and staff. “While maintaining cleanliness is the norm for our industry, wearing face masks and social distancing was still a prevalent factor that needed careful consideration when I opened the salon. Fortunately, the salon design I had planned pre-COVID, already gave the stylist an abundance of space for each section and the client ownership of their space, so this challenge was easily overcome.”
Opening a salon when the sector struggled is no mean feat, yet three years on, Dot Hait has gone from strength to strength. This is a testament to Phill’s approach to salon management, fostering a cohesive team and a dynamic salon brand. Prioritising client relationships, providing excellent customer service, immediate issue resolution, and continuous improvement based on feedback, underpins Phill’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. “At Dot Hair, our clients are as proud as our stylists to call it their salon” says Phill.
Style and Influence
Phill's expertise in cutting and styling, coupled with his ability to stay current with trends, ensures his work remains fresh and innovative. His approach is relaxed, knowledgeable and creative, influenced throughout his career by icons such as Anthony Mascolo, Trevor Sorbie, and Rita Rusk. Phill continues to evolve and inspire within the industry. From a curious child with a technical mind to a celebrated hairdresser and successful salon owner, Phill continues to demonstrate passion, dedication, and exceptional talent within the industry.
I’m Poppy Saunders, the founder of PS Hair Extensions & PS Hair Co. in Tunbridge Wells, where I specialise in bespoke hair extensions and have spent over a decade helping clients achieve natural, confidence-boosting results. Throughout my career I've been passionate about pushing standards within the hair extension industry, particularly when it comes to creating truly personalised solutions rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
I've always believed hair extensions deserve the same level of thought and precision as any other specialist service in our industry. Too often they're treated as a product when, in reality, they're one of the most technical services we offer. My work has led to opportunities to work with leading brands, educate other professionals, contribute to industry events and work with editors, public figures and clients from across the UK and beyond.
Technical ability is only one part of it. Consistency, client experience, innovation and raising standards across your team are just as important.
Over the years I've been fortunate enough to work with some incredible brands, industry events and editorial opportunities, but what still excites me most is seeing our industry evolve. I love seeing people challenge the norm, question why we do things a certain way and genuinely push standards forwards.
Being asked to judge the inaugural Hair Extension category is a real privilege. I'll be looking for businesses that don't just create beautiful transformations, but that demonstrate outstanding technical knowledge, originality and a genuine commitment to moving our industry forwards.

Since starting my journey in 2000 and training through Toni & Guy, I’ve been driven by a passion for raising standards and helping both people and businesses reach their potential.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the industry’s leading brands, including serving as Lead Educator for Wahl UK. That role has taken me across the UK and internationally, delivering education, presenting on stage, testing products, judging competitions, and mentoring professionals at every stage of their careers. I’m also proud to be an Ambassador for Matakki Scissors, representing a company that shares my commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and education.
Today, I own Barbone in St Albans, a modern barbershop built on the belief that short hair has no gender. My work combines the precision of hairdressing with the heritage of barbering, creating an approach that values technical excellence, creativity, and individuality over trends.
Education remains at the centre of everything I do. Whether I’m delivering seminars, mentoring barbers one-to-one, or speaking at industry events, my aim is simple: to share knowledge that helps others become more confident, more skilled, and more successful. I firmly believe that by investing in education, we strengthen the future of our profession.
I’m passionate about challenging convention, embracing innovation, and encouraging our industry to keep evolving. After more than two decades, I’m as motivated today as I was when I first picked up a pair of scissors to keep learning, keep improving, and leave the barbering and hairdressing industry in a better place than I found it.
